Miles & Stockbridge Named #2 Law Firm in the Nation for Black Attorneys
Miles & Stockbridge announced today that it has been named the #2 firm nationally in Law360’s “Best Law Firms for Black Attorneys” list. The firm was recognized for its strong representation by black lawyers and principals.
To compile its list, Law360 surveyed more than 300 U.S. law firms regarding their overall and minority headcount numbers as of December 31, 2015. At Miles & Stockbridge, 4.6 percent of the firm’s principals are black, along with 10.9 percent of non-principals during the survey period. The complete Law360 “10 Best Firms for Black Attorneys” list can be found here. The firm continues to recruit minority lawyers and has added three black lawyers and two Asian lawyers in early 2016.
“Diversity is a core value at Miles & Stockbridge,” said John B. Frisch, chairman and CEO. “The firm strives every day to elevate diversity and inclusion from an initiative to a way of life for all colleagues. Diverse colleagues with minds and viewpoints informed by significantly different perspectives are essential to solving our clients’ legal challenges in today’s ever-changing business environment.”
Michael A. Brown, a principal and member of Miles & Stockbridge’s board of directors, chairs the firm’s diversity committee, which recruits women and minority lawyers, assists them in their professional development and places them on key client and industry teams and internal firm committees.
“We’re one of the fastest-growing law firms in terms of diversity in the country. It’s not just a box we’re checking,” Brown said. “We develop minority and women partners, and our commitment is borne out of the fact that a diverse team is a stronger team, and inclusion brings very real value to the client.”
All of these efforts are supported by the firm’s strategic plan, which focuses on diversity and inclusion—and demands measurable results. Specific recruitment, retention and promotion efforts include:
New Interview Policy: Of particular note, Miles & Stockbridge implemented a new policy in 2015, requiring that the firm interview at least one woman, minority or LGBT lawyer for each open position. This policy helped the firm recruit and hire 29 lawyers, including 15 women lawyers and 10 lawyers of color, in 2015.
The Miles Minority Network: A group of minority lawyers at Miles & Stockbridge formed The Miles Minority Network to create opportunities to build a vibrant minority professional community and serve as a resource for professionals of all backgrounds in the Baltimore-Washington region. The group is chaired by Donny English, a principal in our Commercial & Business Litigation Practice Group.
Mentoring & Professional Development: The firm strives to support lawyers through formal mentoring and professional development relationships, real-time feedback and substantive evaluations at all stages of their careers, recognizing that as lawyers progress through their careers, the type of mentoring and professional development they need changes.
Leadership Council on Legal Diversity: Frisch is a member of the national Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) and Alicia Ritchie, a principal in the firm’s Products Liability & Mass Torts Practice Group, is a lifetime alumni of its Fellows Program. In 2016, Anitra Androh is participating in the year-long Fellow Program, a landmark program created to identify, train, and advance the next generation of leaders in the legal profession. LCLD, which was founded in 2009, is a growing organization of more than 240 corporate chief legal officers and law firm managing partners who are personally committed to creating a truly diverse legal profession.
